Montenegro: One of Europe's Most Dramatic Motorcycle Destinations

Montenegro is a country the size of a large Croatian county, but it packs an extraordinary density of dramatic landscape into that space. Mountains that drop almost vertically into the sea. A medieval walled city at the innermost point of the most beautiful bay in the Adriatic. A switchback road that climbs 1,700 metres in 25 hairpin bends with views that look like a painted backdrop. Montenegro is, by any measure, one of the finest motorcycle destinations in all of Europe.

The ride from Split takes approximately three to four hours along the Adriatic Highway, crossing into Montenegro at the Debeli Brijeg border crossing after Dubrovnik. Moto Andro provides all documentation required for the crossing, including the Green Card insurance extension that most rental companies either forget to mention or charge heavily for.

The Bay of Kotor – the Adriatic's Greatest Natural Stage

The Bay of Kotor (Boka Kotorska) is a drowned river canyon – technically not a fjord, but so similar in character that the comparison is inevitable. The road that follows the bay's perimeter from Herceg Novi to Kotor is one of the most visually spectacular stretches of tarmac in Europe: the water beside you, the mountains above you, and medieval fortified towns appearing around every corner.

Kotor itself is a perfectly preserved medieval city enclosed within 4.5 km of city walls. Plan at least one night here – riding the bay road in the early morning before the tour buses arrive is an experience that belongs in the first category of rides you'll never forget.

The Lovćen Road and the Montenegrin Interior

The road from Kotor up to Mount Lovćen is the ride that defines Montenegro for motorcyclists. It begins modestly and then reveals itself in 25 numbered hairpin bends cut into the mountain face, each delivering a wider view of the bay below until, from the top, the entire Boka Kotorska stretches out like a map.

From Lovćen the road continues to Cetinje, Montenegro's historic royal capital, and then to the spectacular Morača canyon. A three-day loop from Split – out via the coast, through Kotor and Lovćen, back via the canyon to Dubrovnik – is one of the finest short motorcycle tours in the Balkans. Talk to the Moto Andro team and we will plan every kilometre of it.
