Ride Split Like a Local

The Tourist Version and the Local Version Are Two Different Countries

Every popular destination has two versions: the one that tourists see and the one that locals live. In Split, the tourist version is Diocletian's Palace, the Riva and the beach at Bačvice – all genuinely worth seeing. The local version is the road above Klis at sunrise, the konoba in Gornji Muć where the lamb has been under the peka since six in the morning, the harbour in Rogač on the island of Šolta where no tour bus has ever parked.

The difference between experiencing the tourist version and the local version is almost entirely a matter of transport. A motorcycle gives you access to the second version. You stop where you want, you turn when something looks interesting and you cover the kind of distance that transforms a day trip into a genuine exploration.

The Roads That Locals Actually Ride

Local riders in Split avoid the Jadranska magistrala in high summer if they can – too much caravan traffic, too many rental cars doing 60 in a 90 zone. They use the road over Mosor mountain, which climbs from Stobreč into the karst plateau above Split and connects to Omiš via a back road that most tourists have never heard of. They cut through the fields of Kaštela along the old front road that runs beneath the ancient fortresses.

These are the roads we share with every Moto Andro guest. This local knowledge is not in any guidebook and is not on Google Maps' suggested routes – it comes from years of riding the same landscape and knowing which roads reward the rider and which ones simply get you there.

The Mindset: Slow Down, Turn Off, Stop Often

The most important advice for riding Croatia like a local is also the simplest: slow down. Not on the open road – there the pace can be whatever the road allows – but in your itinerary. A local rider heading from Split to Šibenik does not try to do it in the minimum possible time. They take the old coast road, stop at the fort above Kaštel Stari, have a coffee in Trogir's old town and arrive in Šibenik in time to walk the city walls before dinner.

Moto Andro rentals work around your schedule. Talk to us when you collect the motorcycle and we will give you a route that fits your pace, your interests and your experience level. That is the local way to ride Croatia.
